Human civilisation develops in urban settlements. Close cohabitation creates safety and is a prerequisite for differentiated and sophisticated societies. This project examines the physical relics of cities in Greek and Roman antiquity, a time of especially intense urbanisation. For exploring the characteristics and the development of spatial and social structures of ancient times, new research concepts and methods are being tested and developed.
